- Info: Live kelp forest exhibit webcam at the Aquarium of the Pacific in California. The exhibit replicates Blue Cavern Point, a kelp forest along the northeastern coast of Santa Catalina Island. Blue Cavern is located in one of the strictest marine sanctuaries in Southern California.
More info: Blue Cavern Point is on the eastern edge of Santa Catalina Island and around 25 miles off the coast of San Pedro. In the shallow edges of the water cling starfish, sea urchins and sea cucumbers. Farther out in deeper seas, there are bright orange garibaldi and giant sea bass which live in swaying forests of giant kelp.
The Aquarium of the Pacific has three giant sea bass, under a special permit from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The two larger bass have inhabited the Honda Blue Cavern exhibit since 1998, and have been identified as male and female (the larger of the two) because of their spawning behaviour. They are thought to be about 30 years old.
