  • Info: Live underwater webcam showing koi fish in a pond in the United States. Koi fish are colorful, ornamental versions of the common carp and are kept in outdoor ponds all over the world. Koi are long-lived and have a typical life span of around 40 years, but the oldest-known koi lived to be 230 years old.


More info: Koi are thought to originate from eastern Asia, in the Black, Caspian, Aral Seas and China before being introduced to Japan. Records dating back to AD200, show Koi being kept by a Japanese emperor.

In the early 19th century, farmers in Niigata in Japan were at the forefront of koi development and actively bred koi to create the colourful varieties known today.
