The Passages of the Deep exhibit at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, allows the visitor to explore the ocean realm that exists off the coast of Oregon.

The part of the exhibit called Open Sea, is alive with five species of shark, huge bat rays and great schools of anchovy and mackerel. The sharks are particularly popular with Aquarium visitors and all the species are native to Oregons coastal waters, including the largest specimen, the Broadnose Sevengill Shark.

The broadnose sevengill shark, as its name suggests, has seven pairs of gill slits whereas most sharks have only five. It has a single dorsal fin situated far back on its body and is coloured pale grey above, white below and with small black spots.

The broadnose sevengill shark is a coastal species commonly found in shallow bays. It is an active, strong shark moving inshore at high tide, and retreating off-shore at low tide. The broadnose sevengill shark is aggressive when provoked. In Australian and New Zealand waters this shark is regarded as dangerous.
