More info: The barn owl population is soaring to new heights in the Everglades Agriculture Area. Farmers have been encouraged to use natural rodent and pest control and have provided homes and artificial nesting boxes for barn owls to encourage breeding. The open terrain of the Everglades is ideally suited to barn owls.

These natural predators reduce the need for chemical rodenticides benefitting the famer with reduced crop damage and saving money on rodenticides. Rodents are responsible for millions of dollars in damage to crops and farm equipment each year.

About 90 percent of a barn owl diet consists of rodents and despite the abundance of food for the owls, they were disappearing in many parts of the United States and Canada due to the loss barns for nesting. Barns have been disappearing across the continent due to changes in agriculture
