More info: Barred Owls are widely distributed throughout the state wherever large, unfragmented tracts of forested land are present. Barred Owls are only slightly smaller than Connecticut’s largest native owl the Great Horned owl. Because the Great Horned Owl predates young Barred Owls, the two owls are rarely found near each other.

Barred owls are found throughout the Eastern and Midwestern United States, as well as in the North western states such as Washington and Oregon, and in Canada. It is a very common owl in Connecticut.

The preferred habitat of barred owls is dense conifer or mixed coniferous and deciduous forests, wooded swamps, and river valleys. Only a little smaller than the Great Horned Owl, the Barred Owl is markedly less aggressive, and competition with its tough cousin may keep the Barred out of more open woods.

In Connecticut barred owls court in February and March and you are most likely to hear them calling in these months. Owls tend to mate for life, and find each other at the time of the breeding season. Barred owls nest in tree cavities and usually lay 3 to 4 eggs.
