More info: Garden birds can be helped by planting trees and bushes which bear fruit and berries, leaving seedheads, feeding all year round, providing water for drinking and bathing, and putting up nesting boxes.

Species of birds seen in gardens and in the local area change with the seasons as birds come and go. Spring migration brings in species such as swallows, martins, cuckoos and nightjars that are only seen in the summer.

In Devon there are three species of thrush which are resident all year round, but this number is boosted in autumn by the inward migration of another two species. The thrushes which visit in winter are called the redwing and fieldfare (collectively known as 'winter thrushes') whilst the resident trio are the song thrush, mistle thrush and blackbird.

A good population of birds in the garden are part of a healthy garden, helping to keep caterpillars and aphids in check which can damage garden plants.
