More Info: In Spring the first birds to return to Southern Ontario, are the American Robins, who often arrive during the first week of March. The American Robin is a small songbird which is a migratory species.
Some birds are easy to spot, such as the noisy Blue Jay and the busy Chickadee. In southern Ontario, black-capped chickadees are a familiar sight on the margins of rolling hills and small meadows, often foraging for grass and other food sources before winter. The bird’s song is especially enjoyable during winter when they are commonly seen perched in a birch tree.
Other birds which are only in the area during the summer months, include the Rose Breasted Grosbeak and the Ruby Throated Hummingbird. The pretty Cedar Waxwings pass through the area in late summer and may be seen in large flocks.
Some species easy to miss are the Indigo Bunting and shy Catbird as they spend most of their time in woodland
Some bird species arrive in the fall and stay for the winter, such as the Snow Bunting and Slate Junco.
