The roller is a secondary cavity nester and often uses the abandoned holes of the green woodpecker and the black woodpecker. Important breeding sited include old open forest, or natural softwood floodplain forests. They will also occupy artificial nest boxes.

Eggs are generally laid during May to June with a clutch size of 4 to 5 white eggs. Incubation is mainly carried out by the female for 17 to 20 days and commences before the clutch is complete. Rollers are described as aggressively territorial, solitary breeders during the breeding season, actively defending a zone of roughly 50m around their nest.
