More info: Kamfers Dam is one of four breeding sites in Africa for the lesser flamingo and the only one in South Africa. The lesser flamingo breeds mainly in the Rift Valley lakes of East Africa in Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania. Three smaller breeding congregations occur in West Africa, in southern Africa, and in India and Pakistan. When not breeding, the lesser flamingo is found in virtually every sub-Saharan country and from the Arabian Peninsula to Pakistan.

Breeding colonies of lesser flamingos are often mixed with greater flamingos. The timing of breeding is irregular and varies geographically, depending on the timing of the rains. The seasonal rains provide the necessary flooding to isolate remote breeding sites from predators as well as providing the soft muddy material for nest construction.
