The Lagunas de El Oso constitute the most important wetland in the La Moraña region, north of Ávila. The El Oso Lagoon Reserve is made up of a couple of steppe lagoons, the largest - the El Oso Lagoon itself - has an area of 16 hectares and is included in the Regional Catalog of Wet Areas of Special Interest of Castilla y León. The reserve is located in a cereal plain, surrounded by large pine groves, which increases the number of species that can be observed.
The reserve is made up of steppe lagoons, small wetlands and ponds.
Common crane winter here in their hundreds and it holds a big population of
Greylag Geese. In spring visitors include garganey, common shelduck, avocet, black-winged stilt and snipe, white stork and little ringed plover. In summer black-bellied sandgrouse use the lagoon to drink and get water for their young.
