Mote info: The rainbow lorikeet is a species of parrot found in Australia. It is an introduced species in Perth, Western Australia, Tasmania, Auckland, New Zealand and Hong Kong.

In Australia, rainbow parakeets are common along the eastern seaboard, from northern Queensland to South Australia, in rainforest, woodland and coastal bush habitat and urban areas.

The rainbow lorikeet has a blue or mauve head, a blue belly with an orange red neck and breast and green wings, tail and back. In flight a yellow wing-bar contrasts clearly with the red underwing coverts. Both males and females look alike and juveniles have a black beak, which gradually changes to orange in the adults

Rainbow lorikeets are social, active, and noisy birds. They often travel together in pairs and occasionally respond to calls to fly as a flock, later to disperse again into pairs. They are territorial and will defend their feeding and nesting space aggressively, against other Rainbow lorikeets as well as other bird species including larger birds such as the Australian magpie.

Rainbow lorikeets feed on flowers, pollen, nectar, seeds, insects, and some fruit. They have a specially adapted brush-tipped tongue which enables them to reach the pollen and soak up nectar.
