More info: The northern saw-whet owl is a small reddish-brown owl with white streaks on the belly, a large, round head, bright yellow eyes, black beak, and feathered feet. Males only weigh around 75g and the females slightly more.

The name saw-whet owl comes from the rhythmic tooting song which reminded settlers of the sound made by a whetstone sharpening a saw. The saw-whet owl tends to vocalize only during the breeding season which lasts from March to May.

In the nesting season, saw-whet owl males choose and defend territories and then call to attract females who then choose the nest cavity.

The female saw-whet owl lays 4 to 7 eggs and the incubation period is 26 to 28 days. Young fledge at 4 to 5 weeks, and may leave the nest individually every 1 to 2 days, until they have all left. The young owls are cared for by the parents for some weeks after they leave the nest.
