More info: Hummingbirds embark on two migratory journeys each year – one in Spring and another in Autumn which allows the tiny birds spend the breeding season in the U.S. and Canada.

Hummingbirds are the smallest type of bird on earth measuring between two and five inches in length. Their name comes from the distinct buzzing sound made by their wings as they beat up to 80 times per minute. There are over 300 recognized species of hummingbirds but only about a dozen regularly migrate northward into the U.S. and Canada.

The migrating birds are in a race to reach the best feeding territories and the striking Anna’s Hummingbird has a clear advantage, as it remains on the West Coast year-round. Hummingbirds have the highest metabolic rate of any animal, and consume up to half their weight in nectar each day.

Hummingbird migration in Texas is only one of the many popular migrations through the state. For instance, out of the 630+ species of birds in Texas, over two-thirds of them are migrants.
