More info: Chipmunks are small, ground-dwelling rodents which are members of the squirrel family. Apart from the Siberian chipmunk, all species of chipmunks are native to North America. The eastern chipmunk inhabits most of the eastern half of the United States and Canada and the western chipmunk inhabits the western states as well as most of Canada.

Chipmunks will make nests in logs and bushes or create underground burrows with a tunnel system. Their tunnel systems can be 10 to 30 feet (3 to 9.1 m) long. Despite their size, chipmunks can cause significant damage to homes, yards, and farms.

Chipmunks are not social animals and are generally found alone except for in the mating season in spring. They spend most of the day foraging and are most active around dawn and dusk. It is possible for a single chipmunk to gather up to 165 acorns in a day. When their food is plentiful in the warmer months, chipmunks will use their expandable cheek pouches to stuff food in to and then carry it off to their home for storage. As they do not hibernate they use this food store to live off in winter.

Chipmunks are omnivores with a varied diet including mushrooms, berries, nuts, seeds and grains as well as other creatures like insects, baby birds, frogs and bird eggs.
