More info: The white tailed deer is native to North America, Central America, Ecuador, and South America as far south as Peru and Bolivia. It takes its name from the long white hair on the underside of the tail and rump. Whilst fleeing, the hair is flared and very visible and the tail is held aloft like a signaling flag.

Whitetail deer are able to survive in diverse habitats, from the big woods of northern Maine to the deep saw grass and hammock swamps of Florida. They are also found on farmland, scrub areas and even in the cactus and thornbrush deserts of southern Texas and Mexico.

Apart from humans, predators include wolves, mountain lions, bears, jaguars, and coyotes.
