MORE INFO : Lubee Bat Conservancy is the global leader in fruit bat care, husbandry, and medical management. Located in Gainesville, Florida, over 200 bats are housed on property, spending their days playing, socializing, and interacting with their roost mates.
There are over 1,400 species of bats in the world and they can be found on nearly every part of the planet except in extreme deserts and polar regions. The smallest bat is the Kitti’s hog-nosed bat (also called the Bumblebee Bat) that weighs less than a penny which makes it the world’s smallest mammal. The largest bat is the flying fox which can have a wingspan of up to 6 feet and a weight up to a kilo.
There are over 300 types of fruit which are dependant upon bats for pollination and the spreading of seeds. Without bats, we would not have bananas, avocados and mangoes as well as plants like the iconic saguaro cactus. Insect eating bats are the primary predator of night flying insects, many of which are mosquitoes and agricultural pests. Each night, bats can eat their body weight or more in insects, numbering in the thousands, which can have a big impact upon reducing pesticides used in farming.
