More info: The Wildlife Refuge of Grouse Mountain is home to the orphaned grizzly bears called Grinder and Cooler. The webcam shows a live view of the inside of their den which has infrared cameras to allow observation of the grizzlies, without disturbing them.

The bears will go in to a deep sleep during their hibernation period which can last for 5 months, until they emerge in the spring. During this time, they will not eat, drink, urinate or defecate. The bears will go through a lot of posture changes where they wake periodically to shift around. It is thought this helps prevent pressure sores from developing. Bears also shift positions to better conserve heat.

Grinder was found in 2001 in Invermere, BC. He was wandering alone on a logging road, dehydrated, thin, weak and weighing only 4.5 kg. His mother was never found. Grinder is the dominant bear of the two.

In 2001, Coola was found orphaned on a highway near Bella Coola, BC. His mother had been killed by a truck and, of her three cubs found, Coola was the only one to survive.
