More info: Spotted hyenas have powerful forequarters with shoulders higher than hindquarters, long muscular limbs and a strong neck and jaws. They have one of the strongest bites in the animal kingdom. Although rather dog-like in appearance, they are in fact more closely related to civets and mongooses.
Hyenas have an incredible digestive system which can process food in just 24 hours. They will eat bone, horns, hooves and teeth of their prey and are the only carnivores capable of eating animal hide. Spotted Hyenas have 32-34 teeth including conical premolars designed specifically for cracking and crushing bone. Hyenas are able to utilise prey resources more completely and efficiently than other carnivores.
Female spotted hyenas are generally bigger than males and can weigh anywhere from 100 to 150 pounds. Females are much more dominant than males, even on kills and when leading the clan on hunting patrols. In a clan of spotted hyenas the females are interrelated and new female cubs remain with their mother's group for their entire lives.
