More Info : Florida manatees are also known as sea cows and may reach up to 4 meters long and weigh up to 600kg. Like whales and dolphins, manatees are mammals. Despite living in water manatees have to go to the surface frequently to take in air but when at rest they may stay underwater for up to 15 minutes.
Manatees are graceful, gentle animals who rarely fight and have no natural enemies. Surprisingly, the manatee’s closest relatives are the elephant and the hyrax.
Florida manatees can be found as far west as Texas and as far north as Massachusetts during summer months, but during the winter, manatees congregate in Florida, as they require warm-water habitats to survive.
Manatees are found in shallow, slowmoving rivers, estuaries, saltwater bays, canals and coastal areas, particularly where seagrass beds or freshwater vegetation flourish.
As is common with most large mammals, manatees have a low reproductive rate. Manatees are not sexually mature until the y are about five years old. On average, one calf is born every two to five years, and twins are rare.
