More info: There are nine different species of squirrels in Michigan : Fox squirrels, gray, red, and flying squirrels nest and spend most of their time in trees. Chipmunks, woodchucks and ground squirrels have dens underground and rarely spend time in trees.

There are two species of flying squirrels in Michigan State. The northern flying squirrel inhabits the northern Lower and Upper Peninsulas, while its close relative, the southern flying squirrel, inhabits the southern Lower Peninsula. Flying squirrels are entirely nocturnal and so are more rarely seen.

The largest species of squirrel found in Michigan is the groundhog, also known as the woodchuck. Although classed as a ground squirrel, they can easily climb trees, especially when after young mulberry leaves.

The fox squirrel is the largest tree squirrel in Michigan. It is sometimes mistaken for a gray squirrel, but fox squirrels have rusty-brown and orangish fur and a noticeably orange tinged belly, while gray squirrels have a white belly.
