More info: North Carolina has five species of tree squirrels which are the gray, red, fox, southern flying, and northern flying squirrels.
The largest tree squirrel in North Carolina is the fox squirrel which is nearly twice the size of the more common gray squirrel. It is found primarily in mature longleaf pine forests and open pine-oak forests in the Sandhills and southern Coastal Plain.
The most common squirrel in North Carolina, is the gray squirrel which can be found in all 100 counties of the state. The gray squirrel is between 9 to 12 inches in size, with gray fur, a white belly and large bushy tail and tuftless ears. They are active throughout the day and are scatter hoarders and will cache their food in numerous places for later recovery.
