More info: Humpback whales are a species of baleen whales which are also known as whalebone whales as they have keratinaceous baleen plates (whalebone) in their mouths, to sieve out plankton from the water.
Adult humpback whales range in length from 14–17 m (46–56 ft) and weigh up to 40 metric tons (44 short tons). They have a distinct hump in front of their small dorsal fins and have dark backs ranging in colour from dark grey to blue-black. Their bellies are pale and sometimes white and they have long flippers and broad tail flukes.
Male humpbacks are famous for singing songs to the females during courtship. These songs are distinctly different within each breeding stock, yet some of them seem to share their songs with other groups.
