More info: The painted turtle is the most widespread native turtle of North America. It lives in relatively slow-moving fresh waters, from southern Canada to northern Mexico, and from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
Painted turtles have a smooth shell with bright markings. The relatively flat upper shell has red and yellow markings on a black or greenish brown background. They may live 20-30 years and grow to be the size of dinner plates. Male painted turtles are generally smaller than females and have thicker tails and longer front claws.
Painted turtles can breathe air but are also able to absorb oxygen from the water, which makes it possible for them to sleep underwater.
