More info: The American black bears at Oakland Zoo were given a home after becoming habituated to humans. They were often wandering the Pine Mountain Country Club area of Kern County in search of food. Unfortunately, in June 2017, they brazenly entered the home of an elderly woman and Cambria injured the homeowner who was trying to chase them out. The mother bear was due to be euthanized because of this but was given a second chance when the zoo was able to take her and the cubs.
Feeding black bears not only poses a significant threat to humans and bear safety, it is also illegal in California. Black bears are very smart and opportunistic with an incredible sense of smell and most common human-bear conflicts involve unsecured attractants, such as garbage and human food.
