In October 2024, Osh, the last remaining African elephant at Oakland Zoo, moved to his new home at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)-accredited facility. Donna, the last female African elephant at Oakland Zoo, moved to the same location in September 2023.

More info: Zoos recognize elephants' social and mental needs. That leaves them the choice of either obtaining more elephants - which is difficult and can require lots of expensive new space - or sending them to other zoos or wildlife parks where there is more room and more elephants.
