More info: Despite their name, and the fact they eat bamboo, red pandas are not related to Giant Pandas and studies have shown they are most closely related to raccoons.
Recent genetic studies suggest there are two distinct species of red panda: the Chinese red panda (Ailurus styani) and the Himalayan red panda (Ailurus fulgens). Chinese red pandas typically have a redder face and more distinguished tail rings, and Himalayan red pandas tend to be smaller in size with lighter fur colouring.
Beardsley Zoo in Connecticut is a member of the American Species Survival Plan, a nationwide association of zoos and aquariums working to help ensure the survival of certain endangered animals.
