More info: Toba Aquarium in Japan, is home to some 25,000 individuals representing 1,200 species in 12 distinct zones and has rare species such as dugongs and fishing cats.
There are only three remaining sea otters in captivity in Japan, the two females at Toba Aquarium and a male at Marine World Uminonakamichi in the southwestern city of Fukuoka. In the peak year of 1994, there were 122 sea otters in 28 aquariums across the country.
Sadly, the two females at Toba Aquarium are too old to breed and imports of the endangered species from the United States, their main habitat, have been cut off due to stricter regulations.
