- Info: Live streaming webcam showing a sloth at Reid Park Zoo in Arizona. The sloth is a female called Gwen who is a Linné's two-toed sloth. Two-toed sloths have been called the slowest animals on earth but they can move much faster in water than on land.
More info: Thousands of years ago, large ground sloths roamed the United States. They ranged in size from an average-size dog to that of an elephant. These ground sloths had long claws and ate plants. They became extinct about 10,000 years ago. Present-day sloths are much smaller, and live in trees. The anteater is their closest relative.
Linne's two-toed sloths, have coarse fur, long limbs and big, curved claws. In the wild, they live in the tropical rainforests of Central America and northern South America, and spend most of their time in the tree canopy.
All sloths are folivores which means they are specialized herbivores that primarily eat leaves. They may also consume twigs, buds, fruit, and on occasions, rodents and insects.
